Low Income - Just Getting By

Hard Times

No one can predict the future. As a young person you may have had dreams of grandeur, or at least of making a comfortable living. However, now you've discovered that the profession you trained for isn't as lucrative as you'd hoped. Or perhaps you were successful, but something's happened and you've found yourself, and your family, in financial trouble.

Government Assistance

There are many federal and provincial/territorial programs designed to help low-income families.

One of the most devastating blows to a family's income can be the loss of a job. The Employment Insurance Act is to help people in the Canadian work force in the event they lose their jobs. Whether you're laid off or need time off for maternity leave or illness, Employment Insurance is there to help you.

Another important program is the National Child Benefit. This program is in place to provide financial assistance to parents who need it. This benefit is in addition to Child Tax Credit, and ensures that your children get a healthy start in life. It can also help you get back on your feet.

Many people are badly affected by retirement. The sudden loss of income can be a blow if you aren't prepared. Canada has an important system in place to help: the Old Age Security program. Through Old Age Security Pensions, Guaranteed Income Supplements and Allowances, this program can really help you out.
